Getting to Know You
Shavonte Ross is an accounting student at Wayne State University, where she expects to graduate in 2021. Shavonte is one of the first MICPA student members to take on a leadership role in the newly launched Student Champion program (see next story). She took an accounting class when she was working on her associate’s degree and fell in love.  She told us: “I guess you could say accounting chose me!” Shavonte is leaning toward becoming an auditor, and would like to work with non-profit organizations.

CPA Exam Tip
Today’s CPA Exam Tip comes from MICPA member Alex Drost, CPA, vice president at Cascade Partners, an investment banking and private investment firm. Alex sat for the CPA Exam in 2013 after completing his BBA degree with dual majors in accounting and finance from Northwood University with 120 credit hours. He passed all four parts the first time. Then he went on to earn his MS in finance from Walsh College, where he completed the 150-hour requirement for certification.

Alex’s words of wisdom:

Keep calm and study on. This was the best piece of advice I received early on in my CPA studies. Best of all, it came from a meme. All jokes aside, keeping calm and focused during your CPA prep is hands-down one of the most important things to remember. At times you’ll end up frustrated and discouraged, but you must remember that “the pain is only temporary.” Continually remind yourself that this is a short-term sacrifice for a long-term gain. Better yet, find others going through the same process and remind each other of this!
