More than 40 MICPA members and accounting professionals gathered in Lansing on June 2 for CPA Day at the Capitol, meeting with 18 Michigan legislators and legislative staff to advocate for issues affecting the profession, Michigan businesses and the future accounting workforce. While protest-style signs added some fun to the event, the message was serious: support HB 4893, legislation that would create a nationally aligned pathway to CPA licensure, reduce barriers to entry and help address Michigan's CPA talent shortage.

More than 40 MICPA members and accounting professionals gathered in Lansing on June 2 for CPA Day at the Capitol, meeting with 18 Michigan legislators and legislative staff to discuss issues affecting the CPA profession, Michigan businesses and the future accounting workforce.

In addition to legislative meetings, attendees heard presentations highlighting the importance of CPA engagement in the advocacy process and the impact the profession's voice can have on public policy. Members also received updates from representatives of the Michigan Department of Treasury and the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency on issues affecting taxpayers, employers and practitioners across the state.

During the event, attendees advocated for several key legislative priorities, including:

  • Additional Pathway to CPA Licensure (HB 4893): Support for legislation creating an additional pathway to CPA licensure through 120 credit hours, two years of experience and CPA Exam passage.
  • Tax on Services Bill Package (HB 5872-5880): Oppose any effort to classify CPA and accounting services as "luxury services" subject to sales tax.
  • Tax Reform (HB 5235 & 5236): Support legislation that simplifies Michigan tax rules and provides greater clarity for taxpayers and practitioners.

Take Action on HB 4893

After bipartisan passage in the Michigan House, HB 4893 is now under consideration by the Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee and needs your support. This important legislation creates a nationally aligned pathway to CPA licensure, helping reduce barriers to entry, expand access to the profession and address Michigan's CPA talent shortage.
